The 16th U.S. President, Abraham Lincoln, in his Gettysburg Address said, "The Government is by the people, for the people and of the People". He made it very clear that the people are the mainstay of the Nation-State. The United States is one of the successful democracies in the world even now, as their system was more transparent and citizen-friendly; but witnessing the current political scenario, I believe that this 'democracy' is nothing but a illusion; a mere eyewash. It was like a mirage to fatigued freedom fighters, who found it to be more prosperous. On second thoughts, Democratic institutions gives rise to a Welfare-State; but it is not infallible, it has several long term flaws.
Democracy is a electoral phenomenon where people of a Nation-State or a particular autonomous/non-sovereign demarcated area vote for representatives, who when elected into office, will promote the interests of their voters. Colonial Rule in India for almost two centuries, had made India and its natives, accustomed to the democratic practices, imposing various restrictions also. The formation of the Indian Constitution was seen as a ever-living embodiment of Democracy in India, the largest in the world. But since there was a lot of bureaucracy involved, ideas of socioeconomic changes fell under a lot of red tape. Corruption crept in after the advent of the so called 'license raj'. Though Privatization and Economic Liberalization, lessened the hold of license raj, still corruption ensued in various spheres of Public Life.
Besides, Booth Capturing and Poll Rigging are nuances where we lose faith in Democracy. Money talks and here, Money decides the fate of a nation. By that means, Capitalists are the Lords of the Nation and the working class are merely slaves, but there is no brazen display of slavery, but it is obvious that we, are slaves; unfortunately, there is no one who can liberate us, from this disguised misery. Moreover, electoral violence is also a malady of democracy; rather a misuse of it.
Politics is a way of life mired in illusion and imagination; those which are projected form a minimal show of democracy.
